WHEN DID WE START AND WHERE DO WE OPERATE?
Floresta was established in August 2004 in Masia Mamba- Marangu.
To date we have extended to five Districs;
I. Siha
II. Same
III. Moshi rural
IV. Rombo
V. Mwanga
WHY GROUP COMPETITION
- To motivate group members as they implement different activities
- To increase productivity resulting from cooperative teamwork and mutual efforts
- To encourage innovation and creativity necessary to improve processes and results
- Triggers member full participation in group activities
HOW
- The process starts by setting competition criteria
- Process of setting criteria should be participatory
- The competition calendar is then prepared and communicated to all members
- Our M&E team collect data(Quarterly) for each criteria and give appropriate scores
FINALS & AWARD GIVING
- Usually finals and award giving event takes place in December
- The event is preceded by two weeks of massive tree planting campaign
- The event brings together beneficiaries, dignitaries, leaders of different institutions we are working with as well as government leaders
- Awards giving ceremony is usually colored with songs and exhibition
- Farmers bring in their product, share their experience and exchange contact.
- The event serves as platform for connecting farmers and markets
- Usually invited guests and beneficiaries march from a particular agreed place toward the exhibition ground

- This technique helps to promote and motivate other community members to participate
- After a lot of dancing and celebration, the quest of hour open the exhibition
- He/She then give a speech followed by award giving to winners
- Gift such as trophy, FFS- tools, t-shirts, Medals and certificates are given to winners

- Improvement in Data quality and M&E systems

- Increased engagement and commitment of both Floresta staff and group members

Performance trend since competition started
- All performance indicators before group competition were achieved only by (20%, 2010)
- Year one of group competition indicated a positive trend. Most of indicators were achieved by more than ( 50%,2011)
- In year three, a profound achievement were noticed where most of performance indicators were achieved by more than (90%, 2013)

CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
- Conclusively, competition among VICOBA groups has increased engagement and commitment of majority of VICOBA members.
- It has motivated field agents and group members to set stretching goals.
- It has encouraged team work and cooperation among VICOBA members.
RECOMMENDATIONS
- Practitioners should structure competition in such a way that opponents are equally matched.
- Feedback on how each group is progressing should be provided before the final results.
- Participants should be able to measure their progress relative to their opponent.
- Practitioners should mix various activities along-side with competition
- Whenever possible, practitioners should provide training on leadership.
- Practitioners should review competition criteria periodically to address the context of a particular time.
- The emphasis should not be on winning and reward only but on the activities.
- Great care should be taken in setting rewards for winners since every motivator is equally a de motivator.
- Practitioners should make sure that competition criteria are set in such a way that they are challenging yet achievable.
- Whenever possible, Practitioners should make a point to recognize achievements one-on-one and also in group settings.
